Lake Geneva
The first strong winds of the winter required MPV Vevey to be pressed into timetabled service on Thursday 15th November to cover the morning and late-afternoon/evening Lausanne to Evian-les-Bains ferry service vice the large mv Lausanne which is considered unsuitable in such conditions
The same arrangement also applied on Friday 16th November
4th November 2007

MPV Vevey took over the winter Sunday Lausanne to Château-de-Chillon sailings 900-901 followed by two round trips to Evian-les-Bains commencing Sunday 4th November
This was instead of the previously advertised sailings from Geneva
Unfortunately, as a result of the revised later start of the annual overhaul of mv Léman - the CGN's original plan to use the motor paddle vessel to replace mv Lausanne on the peak-hour weekday Evian-les-Bains ferry sailings between Monday 29th October and Tuesday 13th November whilst she has a wine-ship charter was cancelled
as were the plans for her to cover the early-November evening Fondue Cruises
31st October 2007
Lake Geneva
For the second time in two months PS Simplon was in trouble - this time she came into heavy contact with the wall adjoining Geneva Mont Blanc pier in strong winds on Wednesday 31st October and damaged her bow - apparantly taking on board some lake water
Fortunately an internal bulkhead prevented it spreading into the ship's engine
Damage was estimated at SF 50,000 and after "supporting" the the evening "baptême officiel" (naming ceremony) of the new Navibus mv Geneve the paddle steamer subsequently made her own way to Ouchy dock for repairs

Ironically she should have already been laid-up for the winter, but for the last-minute change of roster

Following completion of her timetabled sailings in the Upper Lake PS Simplon was planned to sail light to Geneva to take up the first of her autumn charter sailings on Tuesday 4th September
It was quite stormy as the ship arrived at Geneva Pâquis for her charter cruise and she missed the pier in the storm and touched the pier fenders violently, two of which broke and she sustained a hole in her hull over the waterline
The special cruise was cancelled and PS Simplon subsequently returned to Ouchy on Thursday 6th September for repairs
The paddle steamer completed her repairs on Friday 14th September and returned to service for another charter on Saturday 15th September
26th August 2007
Lake Geneva
Whilst returning to Lausanne on Saturday 25th August on sailing 404, the engineer on PS Montreux noticed a small leak of vapor on the pipe leading from the boiler to the engine (pistons) - as the vapor is at 340° Celsius and the pipe very close to the wooden floor of the main deck, this was a potential fire risk and decision was taken to investigate before continuing operation next morning
That was done on Sunday 26th August and her sailings covered by mv Henry-Dunant - the leak was located on a joint/plug of a temperature sensor on the pipe and repaired on Monday morning, before operating a test run at mid-day with the aim of returning the paddle steamer to service for the evening sailing to Yvoire
Unfortunately, as the leak was not completly eliminated, further investigation were required which led to the cancellation of the evening sailings 403-404 as the motor vessel had a pre-arranged evening charter sailing - however dinner was served on board the static paddle steamer at Ouchy
Tuesday 28th August was used to cool down the boiler and the engine to allow removal of the insulation around the pipe where another minor leak was found and fixed
The paddle steamer returned to service on Wednesday 29th August

Click on the picture below for the CGN official photo feature of the paddle steamer in Ouchy dock
The re-build of the magnificent 1914 built paddle steamer PS Savoie has been completed and she is now based at Geneva for the summer seasons (commencing early July 2006)
The CGN has undertaken two successful share appeals over the last 12 months
In addition to raising money for a new 'high-speed Navibus' and modernisation of the dock complex at Ouchy, sufficient funds have been found to allow

PS La Suisse
to undertake a major re-build

Work commenced on the two-year major re-build the large paddle steamer following the end of the 2007 season

If YOU are concerned about the future of the other
five* members
of the historical fleet

still to be allocated re-build money, then visit the ABVL website (in French) to find out the latest position and ways in which you can help
* two of which are already 'long-term laid-up'
and a third was to join them at the end of 2006 - but a last minute change of policy by the CGN management allowed her to sail on - past her 100th birthday in 2007

Re-build of PS Stadt Zürich and PS Stadt Rapperswil

(updated
25th October
           2005
)
Lake Zurich
Early in 2002, plans were announced for the major renovation of the two Lake Zurich paddle steamers
with a view to increased usage in future years at an
estimated cost of 2,000,000 SF
A detailed "appeal" prospectus is available
direct from the company
You can still e-mail them for a copy
(see my links page for access to their website)

It was reported in the local press in November 2005 that the appeal fund had reached 1,100,000 SF which was sufficient for the major refurbishment of one of the paddle steamers
In consequence work took place on the 1909 built
PS Stadt Zürich during the Winter of 2003-04

The two Zurich paddle steamers were officially awarded
1 million Swiss Francs by the Canton of Zurich on
Monday 23rd June, so the collection campaign
for the 2 vessels is complete
All together 2.4 million Swiss Francs has now been raised
(the original target was 2 million)

PS Stadt Zürich spent the winter 2003-04 in the dry dock
and was re-launched on 13th April 2004
She re-entered public service on Whit Sunday 30th May 2004

PS Stadt Rapperswil completed her 2005 season on
Sunday 23rd October
and has now been withdrawn from service to receive
similar treatment during this winter (2005-06)
