HISTORY
of
PUBLIC SAILINGS

General Over the last decade or so PS Piemonte - the only remaining operational steamer - normally operated just one public sailing each year on the Italian national holiday - 15th August
This was an evening sailing from the paddle steamer's home base at Arona (Italy), sailing only in Italian waters to Laveno fireworks
However, things changed in 2001 (see below) only for the steamer to enter dock for major works at the end of that season
Sailings calling at Swiss piers were few and far between - so far I have not been able to obtain details of any recent visits, although the paddle steamer has also been adverised by the company as available for charter either solely in Swiss waters or for an international cruise
Please e-mail me if you have any further information

2008 Details will be posted at the end of the season - in the interim see 2008 Advance Information  Lake Maggiore Summary and/or 2008 Timetable Index (for links to individual timetables)

2007 Regular three hour public 'lunch' and 'teatime' cruises were operted by the paddle steamer every Sunday in July and August

2006 PS Piemonte finally returned to service and operated a special VIP Inauguration Cruise from Arona to Santa Caterina and the Borromee islands on Saturday 13th May
This was her first outing since spending her 100th birthday in dock
Regular three hour public 'lunch' and 'teatime' cruises were operted by the paddle steamer every Sunday in July and August (except on Sunday 9th July when there was a strike which prevented all sailings on the lake including those rostered for the motor vessels)

2005 Despite considerable work on the only operational paddle steamer over the previous three years, she remained moored at Arona throughout 2005

2004 The only operational paddle steamer PS Piemonte celebrated her real 100th birthday at Arona dock whilst major work took place to her two boilers

2003 The only operational paddle steamer PS Piemonte remained at Arona dock whilst re-plating took place to part of her hull

2002 The only operational paddle steamer PS Piemonte remained at Arona dock all-year with electrical problems

2001 For the first time in many years, PS Piemonte was rostered to operate the timetabled Sunday lunch cruise from Arona to the Borrowmee Isles followed by a round trip from Arona to Stresa in the afternoon on most Sundays between 1st April and 23rd September
On those occaions when the paddle steamer was on charter, these sailings were operated by mv Italia     {not to be confused with the motor paddle vessel having the same name on nearby Lake Garda ! }
The annual public sailing from Arona to Lavino fireworks operated at 2030 on Wednesday 15th August

2000 The annual public sailing from Arona to Lavino fireworks operated at 2030 on Tuesday 15th August

1999 The annual public sailing from Arona to Lavino fireworks operated on Sunday 15th August
